SkinPen Microneedling
SkinPen Microneedling: Your Questions Answered
If you've been thinking about taking your skincare to the next level but aren't quite ready to jump into injectables like Botox or filler, microneedling might be exactly what you're looking for. It's one of those treatments that can deliver real, noticeable results by working with your body's natural healing process, not against it.
I'm excited to offer SkinPen microneedling at Lucent because it allows me to help clients achieve more significant, transformative results. Whether you're dealing with fine lines, texture issues, uneven tone, acne scars, or just want to maintain healthy, glowing skin as you age, this treatment can be a game-changer. Let me walk you through everything you need to know.
What is SkinPen Microneedling?
SkinPen is a medical-grade microneedling device and when I say medical-grade, I mean it. This is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market, specifically approved for improving the appearance of acne scars and neck wrinkles. There's SkinPen, and then there's everyone else.
Here's how it works: The SkinPen uses ultra-fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in your skin. I know that might sound a little intense, but stay with me, this is where the magic happens. Those tiny channels trigger your body's natural wound-healing process, which kicks off a beautiful cascade of skin regeneration.
The process happens in three phases:
1. Inflammation: Right after treatment, your body increases blood flow to the area. Your immune cells immediately get to work cleaning and disinfecting, setting the stage for repair.
2. Proliferation: Your skin starts multiplying fresh, healthy cells to replace damaged ones. New collagen and elastin fibers form, these are the proteins that give your skin its strength, bounce, and youthful appearance.
3. Remodeling: Over the next several months, your skin continues its natural regeneration process. This is when you start seeing the full results, smoother texture, improved tone, and that healthy, rejuvenated look.
The beauty of this treatment is that it works with your body, not introducing anything artificial. No chemicals, no heat, no stress, just your skin doing what it does best.
Why SkinPen?
SkinPen is the gold standard in microneedling. It's FDA-cleared (rigorously tested for safety and effectiveness), offers unmatched precision and depth control for customized treatments, and works for all skin tones without the risk of hyperpigmentation. Those at-home derma rollers? They don't compare, and honestly can do more harm than good when proper sterilization isn't followed.
What Can Microneedling Treat?
Microneedling is excellent for:
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Skin texture and tone irregularities
• Loss of elasticity and firmness
• Acne scars
• Sun damage and age spots
• Large pores
• Rosacea and melasma
• Neck wrinkles
I see everyone from clients in their 20s dealing with acne scarring to clients in their 70s and 80s working on texture and elasticity. Every treatment is fully customized to your specific skin and concerns.
Does It Hurt?
I'm not going to sugarcoat it, microneedling isn't exactly a relaxing spa facial. But it's also not the torture session some people imagine.
Here's my honest take: I wouldn't say it's for the faint of heart, but it's absolutely manageable. We apply a strong topical numbing cream before your treatment, which takes away most of the bite. What you'll feel during the treatment is more of a buzzing sensation and light pressure. Some areas are more sensitive than others, around the nose, upper lip, and forehead tend to be a bit more tender. Most clients describe it as totally tolerable, especially when they see the results. The treatment itself only takes about 20 minutes.
What to Expect
Before: Starting 72 hours before, avoid sun exposure and tanning. At 48 hours, stop retinol and harsh exfoliants. Come with clean, makeup-free skin and bring a hat. If you have darker skin tones, start a tyrosine inhibitor 3-4 weeks prior. If you're prone to cold sores, pre-treat with antiviral medication.
During: About 20 minutes of treatment with a buzzing sensation and light pressure. The numbing cream keeps you comfortable throughout.
After: Your micro-channels stay open for 24 hours, so no sunscreen, makeup, exercise, or sun exposure during this time. Go home and relax. You'll receive post-care products (included) for the first three days. Your skin will feel warm and tight like a mild sunburn. After 24 hours, resume mineral SPF and gradually reintroduce gentle skincare by Day 4. Mild peeling, flaking, or pinpoint bleeding is normal.
Downtime
Most redness subsides within a day or so. Give yourself 24 hours at home with no plans. I typically have clients book on Friday or Saturday so they're back to work Monday. You might have slight pinkness, but nothing makeup can't handle. Don't book right before a big event, give yourself that weekend buffer.
When Will I See Results?
Microneedling is a process, not an instant fix. Some people notice immediate plumping and your skin will look great after about a week. But the real collagen production, the stuff that gives you long-term, transformative results, takes place over 3-6 months. This is why I recommend multiple treatments for a compounding effect.
How Many Treatments?
At minimum, start with 3 treatments spaced 3-5 weeks apart. For deeper concerns like significant acne scars or texture issues, you might benefit from 6 or more. A consultation is required before your first treatment to ensure you're a good candidate and create a customized plan.
Package pricing: book 3 treatments and save 10%, or book 6 and get one treatment free.
Is It Right for You?
Microneedling works beautifully for most people, but it's not for everyone. You should not get this treatment if you have active skin cancer in the treatment area, are allergic to stainless steel or anesthetics, have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant or nursing, or are currently taking Accutane.
If you have lots of visible blood vessels or active acne, I might recommend treating those first. The ideal candidate is committed to the process, willing to follow pre and post-care instructions, and has realistic expectations about timing.
If you're curious about whether microneedling is right for you, let's talk. Book a consultation and we'll go over your specific concerns, create a customized treatment plan, and make sure you have all your questions answered. Your skin deserves this kind of care.
